ON SECOND THOUGHT

R.A. Dickey’s success makes an old knuckler smile

Wilbur Wood has never met R.A. Dickey, but the two are bonded at the fingertips.

Wood grew up in Belmont, signed with the Red Sox out of Belmont High in 1960, and eventually developed a mesmerizing knuckleball that helped him string together four 20-win seasons with the White Sox in the 1970s.

Nice piece, Kevin. Wilbur had a tremendous career. I always think of this story when I hear his name, and I'm sure you remember it.

In 1967 Sox pitcher Lee Stange was renting Wilbur's house in Belmont during the season. Eddie Stanky ordered Wood to throw at Yaz during  a game. George Thomas screamed out at Wood: "If you do that again, we're gonna have Stange's dog crap on your rug!"
