What they were thinking

Catcher RYAN LAVARNWAY, handing out 2013 Red Sox schedules at the Allston-Brighton Toll Booth on the Mass. Pike, as part of a promotion in which the Sox paid motorists’ tolls between 3-4 p.m., Nov. 29, 2012 — “I think this is great. The expressions on people’s faces, they don’t know what’s happening. Half the time, they’re not listening when I tell them we’re going to pay it for them. They’re like, ‘Take the money so I don’t get a ticket.’ It’s all about making people smile and spreading holiday cheer. A Yankee fan pulled up and I told him the Red Sox wanted to pay his toll. And he said, ‘Are you sure? I’m a Yankee fan.’ I said, ‘Yeah, the next time you see the Yankees out there paying tolls, you let me know.’ Then he took his Yankee cap off and shook my hand.”
