NASHVILLE - According to major league sources, the Red Sox have agreed to terms on a three-year deal with free-agent catcher/first baseman Mike Napoli.

The deal is for 3 years, $39 million.

We just gave a .227 hitting platoon player almost the same annual money we gave JD Drew. In 7 full seasons, Napoli has played more than 114 games ONCE (and he hit a whopping .238 that one year). An utterly stupid, ridiculously dumb contract. So glad things are changing on Yawkey Way.... And I'm also really glad we now have four catchers. Guys, Jack Clark might be available too. Better go sign him. Seriously. What the heck are they thinking over there?

Again more man-love for Swisher from Cafardo. Kiley

It seems that vvery time Cherington makes a move that should earn trust (the blockbuster with LA), he follows it up with a complete head-scratcher. I'm assuming they signed Napoli based solely on the fact that he destroys pitching in Fenway Park (Red Sox pitching, that is). But that just isn't a good enough reason. If they knew they were getting the 2011 version of Mike Napoli, I would consider it a great deal. The unfortunate truth, however, is 2011 is the obvious outlier for him - he has never matched that production before or since. It's also worth noting that he's often injured and terrible at playing the field. I don't get the appeal, and I especially don't get it for 3/39.
