Steve Burton’s report, like NHL season, is in limbo

Credit where credit is due: The Channel 4 sports staff deserves a tip of the cap for a noteworthy scoop this week. So then, good work by Dan Roche in beating his media peers and the Patriots public relations staff to the news that Julian Edelman had been placed on injured reserve with a season-ending foot injury.

Not the one you had in mind? Understandable. After all, it wasn’t Roche, but colleague Steve Burton who made news from here to the farthest reaches of western Canada with his report Monday night that a secret meeting had spurred major progress toward ending the NHL lockout.

I look at Burton as more of a guy who reads the news than being an actual reporter. So I'll give him credit for making the effort.

Conspiracy theory: Burton's source fabricated the story in an effort to create a positive buzz and change the tone of the negotiations, in the hope that the report itself starts a chain of events that makes it true. I think the source picked Burton because Burton has nothing to lose and he's from Boston. He doesn't have a reputation as a big scoop breaker and his position within WBZ is secure so you're not ruining someone's career. Also, picking a Boston reporter to leak the story to makes it seem like it may have come from Jacobs who recently became the face of the lockout after multiple reports surfaced about a back-and-forth between him and the Winnipeg Jets owner. If people speculate that Jacobs is the source it lends credibility to the report since he's known as the captain of this ship on the owners' side.

what is it about Globe sports reporters that make them think that the news is supposed to be about themselves.  Shaughnessy, Ryan, Mcdonough, etc., these folks get into ridiculous disputes with local athletes and make the story about their relationships.  For heaven's sake, grow up.  The story is about the athletes and teams.  Try reading the NY Times sports page if you want to see what really good sports reporting is about.  The Globe stuff is generally just an extension of the garbage on sports talk radio
