While i would love to have impact players in the line-up than overpaying in the short term for aged vets; I think Hamilton wouldn't hold up to the scrutiny of Northeast baseball.
Boy, Nick, would you have written the same column before the Red Sox dumped much of the detritus they purchased during their last several spending binges. I don't care how good Josh Hamilton once was. Look at what he did for the Rangers at the end of the season in 2012. The guy is an addict, and as everybody ought to know by now, drugs (and I include alcohol in that category, given the way Josh Hamilton abused both) have an effect on an athlete's (or anybody's) body. How old is Josh Hamilton really, given the substances he has consumed over the years. I could have caught that damned fly ball last fall. I could care less if the Red Sox win the World Series in 2013! I would like to see them avoid last place, if posible, or at least become a team of which I am not ashamed. What have you been smokin', Nick?
The Angels are a good fit for Hamilton. He would not be a good fit for Boston or any place else with heavy media coverage. He has to fight his deamons every day.
Nick, we know you want the Sox to spend spend spend on guys in their 30s. And it's true that they've been completely idiotic in their signings ($114 million for four guys who are all 32+ and on the decline....), but Josh Hamilton wasn't the answer. Not for this team. It's the right fit for a team that needed a big bat to put them over the top. The Sox are going to be a 75-82 win team next year, with or without Hamilton. This team stinks. Would I have rather they sign Hamilton to a contract than the mediocre guys they have? Sure. But the good news is that none of the contracts is long term. Get off it, Nick. Signing guys to "make a splash" is what got the Sox in trouble in the first place. Let's build a core of good young players before we blow our stash on overpriced free agents.
The Red Sox should not have signed Josh Hamilton. A decent enough guy with skills, dedication, and an issue with addiction. A big money, long term deal for Hamilton is too huge a risk to take for a club emerging from the albatross of previous big money, long term contracts recently jettisoned.
Having the financial means to spend unwisely on mediocre free agency "talent" makes no sense. Build the farm system, trade sensibly, but avoid locking up middle aged players to long term contracts.
Bridge year? WTF is a bridge year? Building the club for long term success is far more important than going for the intoxication of foolish spending for the attempt at instantaneous gratification. It's not a bridge, it's sound business.
