Red Sox reach 2-year, $26.5 million deal with Dempster

The Red Sox have their pitcher.

Just a couple of hours after Ben Cherington said the Sox “were engaged” with a free-agent pitcher and after the Globe reported Thursday morning that a deal was close, the Red Sox agreed to terms with veteran Ryan Dempster on a 2-year, $26.5 million deal.

Stupid. "He's a National League pitcher." he wil lose more than he wins.

I'd rather see the Sox try to acquire young arms to build pitching for the future then invest big money in older players.  I know that we don't have many trade chips other than 2 extra catchers and Jacoby, but you would think that we could get a couple of young guys.  2013 is a lost year anyway.

If he's a horse who eats up innings and keeps games within 4, I'll take it. You can't have an ace out there every day, but having someone at the back of the rotation who can give you innings is inredibly important. That he can spin the occasional gem is just a bonus. We haven't had that since Wakefield retired. Who cares what he costs if it is only short term? Better this than give up decent prospects for another Jeff Suppan mid-season.

Overpaying for another free agent.
