Notes: Cubs, Jackson agree to four-year, $52 million deal

The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a four-year, $52 million contract with righthander Edwin Jackson, a person familiar with the situation told the Associated Press. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because no deal was announced. The 29-year-old went 10-11 with a 4.03 ERA with the Nationals last season.

The Cubs also reportedly signed righty Carlos Villanueva to a two-year, $10 million deal. He was 7-7 in 16 starts and 22 relief appearances last season for the Blue Jays, with a 4.16 ERA in 125 innings.

Pierzynski to Texas

The Rangers reached agreement with catcher A.J. Pierzynski on a one-year contract, according to multiple news outlets. An announcement is expected Friday after he has a physical. Pierzynski hit .278 with 27 home runs and 77 RBIs for the White Sox in 2012.

Adams off to Philly

Jonathan Papelbon will have a new setup man after Mike Adams finalized a $12 million, two-year contract with the Phillies. The 34-year-old righty was 5-3 with a 3.27 ERA last season for the Rangers. The deal includes a club option for 2015 that would become guaranteed at $6 million if he has 65 games pitched in 2014. His 2015 salary would be guaranteed at $6.5 million if he has 120 games pitched in 2013 and 2014 combined, with at least 60 in 2014.

Polanco going south

Former All-Star third baseman Placido Polanco agreed to a one-year, $2.75 million contract with the Marlins, plugging the final hole in the team’s projected lineup following a payroll purge. The 37-year-old battled injuries last season and hit .257 in 90 games with the Phillies.

Pelfrey official

Minnesota finalized a one-year, $4 million deal with righty Mike Pelfrey. The 28-year-old made three starts for the Mets last season before having elbow ligament replacement surgery May 1 . . . The Orioles signed outfielder Adam Greenberg to a minor league contract, according to MASNsports.com. Greenberg’s major league career nearly ended seven years ago when he was hit on the head with a pitch in his first plate appearance. The Marlins signed him in September and he struck out in his only big league at-bat . . . Righty reliever Yoshinori Tateyama agreed to a minor league contract to remain with the Rangers. He was 1-0 with a 9.00 ERA in 14 games with Texas in 2012.
