Sean McDonough recovering from scary surgery

Sean McDonough’s days as the television voice of the Red Sox are nearly a decade behind him, and his place in the current sports broadcasting consciousness is enviable, with prominent gigs calling college basketball and football as well as “Monday Night Baseball’’ for ESPN.

Still, because his play-by-play in calling the Red Sox from 1988-2004 offered an uncommon mix of skill, humor, and candor, the usual temptation upon beginning a conversation is to ask him for his thoughts on the state of the Sox.

I always like your play-by-play style.  Informed and not over-thee-top.  Good luck with your recovery.

What a ghastly thing to have happen to you. Here's hoping Sean is back in the booth real soon. He's a class act and a fantastic broadcaster.

I miss Sean so much, all summer long, when I have to listen to the clown show that is Orsillo and Remy.  Sean used to keep Jerry under control, and I wonder how much Remy would be shilling if Sean were next to him to scoff at him, good-naturedly, but pointedly.  For decades in Boston, we were spoiled with very talented, classy announcers for Red Sox games, and Sean was the last in a long line of such.  It's been pretty much downhill since he left.  I keep the "mute" button on for huge swaths of the games now.  I wish the radio and TV were in sync, so I could listen to Joe Castig and Dave O'B while watching the game; they're very good, too.

Best of health, Sean, now land in the New Year.  Merry Christmas.
