Sports Log: Margus Hunt sparks SMU to Hawaii Bowl win

College football

Defensive end Margus Hunt set the tone for SMU’s 43-10 win over Fresno State in the Hawaii Bowl in Honolulu Monday night. Hunt, the 6-foot-8-inch senior from Estonia with an 82-inch wing span, forced two fumbles that led to field goals and sacked Derek Carr for a safety as SMU (7-6) built a 22-0 halftime lead and never looked back. The Mustangs also returned two interceptions for touchdowns, giving them eight for the season to tie the NCAA record set last year by Southern Miss. Hayden Greenbauer picked off Carr and returned it 83 yards, the final blow to a miserable night for the Bulldogs (9-4) . . . Texas Tech suspended three players for Friday’s Meineke Car Care Bowl for violating unspecified team rules. Starting defensive back Cornelius Douglas, linebacker Chris Payne, and defensive tackle Leon Mackey won’t play against Minnesota at Houston’s Reliant Stadium . . . New Arkansas coach Bret Bielema said Washington running backs coach Joel Thomas will join the Razorbacks in the same position. Thomas has spent the past four seasons at Washington and previously has coached running backs at Purdue, Louisville, and Idaho.
