The Red Sox have viewed a workout by veteran major leaguer Bobby Abreu that included his taking grounders at first base. The 17-year veteran and two-time All-Star is a free agent. He turns 39 in March and is coming off a season in which he hit .242 with a .693 OPS for the Angels and Dodgers over 100 games and 257 plate appearances. The lefthanded-hitting outfielder could fill a spot on the bench for the Sox. But he has never played first base professionally. Abreu also is 18 of 87 (.207) with one home run in his career as a pinch hitter. - PETER ABRAHAM

Storm suffered second-degree burns on her chest and hands, and first-degree burns to her face and neck. She lost her eyebrows and eyelashes, and roughly half her hair. Storm will host ABC’s telecast of the 2013 Rose Parade Tuesday. Her left hand will be bandaged and she said viewers might notice a difference in her hair texture where extensions have been added. Boise State to stay in Mountain West
Boise State has backed out on a commitment to join the Big East and will remain a member of the Mountain West in 2013. Boise State and the Mountain West announced they had come to an agreement to keep the Broncos playing in the league they have been a part of the past two seasons. Boise State, which left the Western Athletic Conference for the Mountain West after the 2010 season, is still on the hook to pay a $5 million exit fee to the Big East, though the school says there are ‘‘provisions’’ that could make it less. Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson said the conference will help Boise State pay its exit fee. ‘‘We are disappointed that Boise State has decided not to join the Big East Conference,’’ commissioner Mike Aresco said. The Broncos were scheduled to join the Big East next year for football only. Boise State’s other sports were going to compete in the Big West.
