Roundup: BC High, Malden Catholic tie in boys’ hockey

BC High and Malden Catholic played to a 2-2 tie in a Catholic Conference clash of hockey titans Wednesday night at UMass-Boston. Both teams came into the contest undefeated.

The game started with a quick goal from No. 1 Malden Catholic’s Ara Nazarian, who scored just 10 seconds into the first period.

“We just come to expect that from him,” said BC High coach John Flaherty, whose No. 2 team moved to 5-0-1.

The first period was one in which the Lancers (3-0-2) controlled the puck early on, but BC High’s Steve DeForge changed that in the eighth minute.

DeForge found a way to get off a backhander on Lancers goaltender Connor Maloney while falling to the ice. The shot went between Maloney’s pads to tie the score at 1-1.

“We were just trying to get shots. I saw the defenseman was giving me a screen, I went backhanded and just hoped for the best,” DeForge said.

An increase in intensity set the tone in the second period. The teams combined for six penalties in the first half of the period, leading to power-play opportunities, but only one capitalized.

BC High’s Ryan McDonough broke the tie, pulling the Eagles ahead, 2-1, heading into the final period.

“He’s all heart,” Flaherty said.

It seemed as if that might stand up, and it likely would have if not for Malden Catholic’s Tyler Sifferlen.

Sifferlen tied the score at 2-2 with just more than eight minutes left. “It was a good, hard-fought game with no pretty goals,” Malden Catholic coach John McLean said.
