Roundup: Boston University hockey cruises past Merrimack

Paced by a career-high 37 saves from freshman Sean Maguire, the No. 8 Boston University men’s hockey team posted a 4-1 win over Merrimack Friday at Lawler Arena in North Andover.

Wade Megan opened the scoring for BU (12-7-0, 9-4-0 Hockey East) at 12:20 of the first period with his second shorthanded goal of the year.

Sahir Gill and Cason Hohmann scored in the second period before Matt Nieto made it 4-0 midway through the third.

The Warriors (7-9-4, 5-5-1) spoiled Maguire’s shutout when Kyle Bigos scored with 6:22 left in regulation.

Northeastern 1, Maine 1 — Freshman Bill Norman’s first collegiate goal 5:27 into the second secured a tie for the Black Bears (5-12-3, 1-7-3 Hockey East) at Matthews Arena.

Forward Kevin Roy gave the Huskies (6-10-2, 3-8-3) the lead at 16:06 of the first period with his ninth goal of the year.

Chris Rawlings made 42 saves for Northeastern, while Maine’s Martin Ouellette stopped 31 shots.

UMass-Lowell 4, Vermont 2 — Scott Wilson scored twice in the first as the No. 20 River Hawks (10-7-1, 4-6-1 Hockey East) beat the Catamounts (6-10-4, 3-7-5) in Burlington, Vt.

Providence 5, UMass 4 — Stefan Demopoulos scored twice, including the shorthanded game-winner at 8:16 of the third period as the Friars (8-8-3, 6-4-2 Hockey East) edged the Minutemen (7-10-2, 4-7-1) at Mullins Center in Amherst.

Derek Army also picked up two goals and Jon Gillies made 26 saves for the win.

Holy Cross 2, Mercyhurst 1 — Junior Adam Schmidt’s goal at 8:25 of the third period was the difference, giving the Crusaders (11-6-2, 7-3-2 Atlantic Hockey) the win over the Lakers (9-8-1, 7-4-0) in Erie, Pa.

Bentley 3, RIT 0 — Junior Branden Komm made 41 saves and the Falcons (8-9-1, 6-5-1 Atlantic Hockey) got goals from Brett Switzer, Brett Hartung, and Justin Breton to shut out the Tigers (5-10-4, 3-6-3) in Rochester, N.Y.

Quinnipiac 1, Rensselaer 1 — Jeremy Langlois scored at 9:59 of the second as the No. 5 Bobcats (16-3-3, 10-0-1 ECAC) tied the Engineers (6-9-4, 1-5-3) in Hamden, Conn.

Yale 5, St. Lawrence 3 — Jeff Malcolm made 36 saves and the No. 14 Bulldogs (8-4-3, 4-3-1 ECAC) got goals from five skaters to beat the Saints (8-10-2, 1-5-2) in Canton, N.Y.

Brown 3, Clarkson 2 — Ryan Jacobson scored twice and Anthony Borelli matched a career high with 34 saves to lift the Bears (5-6-4, 1-3-4 ECAC) over the Golden Knights (4-11-5, 3-4-1) in Potsdam, N.Y.

Niagara 3, AIC 2 — Hugo Turcotte broke a tie at 11:14 of the third period as the No. 17 Purple Eagles (12-3-4, 11-0-1 Atlantic Hockey) edged the Yellow Jackets (4-11-3, 1-8-3) in West Springfield.

Women’s hockey

Harvard 3, Princeton 0 — Laura Bellamy, the nation’s leader in goals-against average and save percentage, posted her 18th career shutout as the No. 2 Crimson (12-1-1, 10-0-0 ECAC) blanked the Tigers (6-11-2, 2-9-2) at Bright Center.

Michelle Picard and Kalley Armstrong scored in the first period and Jillian Dempsey’s 17th of the year, at 2:26 of the third, ran her point streak to a career-long 28 games.

Men’s basketball

Creighton 74, Missouri State 52 — Doug McDermott scored a season-high 39 points as the No. 13 Bluejays (16-1) trounced the Bears (5-12) in Springfield, Mo.
