Bob Melvin, the reigning AL Manager of the Year, received a two-year extension through the 2016 season on Monday after leading Oakland to a surprising AL West title last year. Later in the day, Oakland announced it had reached agreement on a $1 million, one-year contract with catcher George Kottaras . . . Reliever J.J. Putz agreed to a $13.5 million, two-year contract with the Diamondbacks. Arizona exercised the 35-year-old’s $6.5 million option Oct. 20 and he would have been eligible for free agency after the 2013 season . . . Righthander Tommy Hunter and the Orioles agreed to a $1.82 million, one-year contract, more than tripling the 26-year-old’s salary last year . . . Outfielder Colby Rasmus agreed to a one-year deal with Toronto worth $4.675 million and outfielder Adam Loewen agreed to a minor league contract to return . . . Interpreters may be able to make mound trips with managers and pitching coaches this year. Major league owners approved the change when they met last week in Paradise Valley, Ariz. The change must be approved by the players’ association.
