Sunday’s Division 4 state relays did not lack for passion. As he crossed the finish line just behind his opponent, one frustrated runner threw his baton to the ground. One girl stumbled out of the starting blocks and tumbled to the ground before that race was restarted. Meet records fell, and starting guns provoked the crowd into cheering, which grew louder as the afternoon wore on.
Amid the bustle at the Reggie Lewis Center, the Weston boys and the Old Rochester girls emerged as the big winners. Weston overtook defending champion Old Rochester in the final two events to win the boys’ meet, 38-35.6. The Old Rochester girls’ win came a year after they finished a close second to Norwell. On Sunday, Old Rochester finished 3 points ahead of second-place Ipswich, 35-32.
