Mets sign ex-Red Sox reliever Scott Atchison

Former Red Sox reliever Scott Atchison has signed a minor-league contract with the Mets that includes an invitation to spring training.

Atchison became a free agent in November after appearing in 42 games and posting a 1.58 earned run average.

An unsung hero for the past several years, particularly after foregoing surgery to come back in 2012 to help with what should have been a stretch drive rather than another abject Red Sox collapse. Apparently he was "squeezed out" by greater talents like Melancon and Bailey. Yet he consistently pitched above expectations while most of the Sox arms underperformed. Atchison should get a fairer shot with the Mets, and I hope he does. The guy has a rubber arm, decent if not high-end stuff, and the attitude of a winner.
