N.E. roundup: Army defeats Holy Cross

Ella Ellis scored 23 points, making all 11 of his free throws, and Kyle Wilson added 21 as Army pulled away from Holy Cross Wednesday night in Worcester, 80-66.

The Black Knights (10-11, 3-3 Patriot League), who won two consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 22, trailed, 20-13, when Ellis hit three free throws at the 9:20 mark. That sparked a 25-14 run to close the first half.

Larry Toomey’s 3-pointer extended Army’s lead to 41-34 after the break.

The Crusaders closed to 44-42 on a pair of Phil Beans free throws, but Cartavious Kincade and Wilson answered with layups and Ellis hit two more foul shots.

Justin Burrell’s 14 points led Holy Cross (10-11, 2-4), which has lost three straight.

Virginia Commonwealth 70, Rhode Island 64 — Juvonte Reddic tallied 18 points and 12 rebounds and Treveon Graham posted his 15th straight game in double figures with 19 points, 8 from the free throw line, in the VCU Rams’ victory over the host URI Rams.

VCU (17-5, 5-2 Atlantic 10) has won 15 of its last 18 true road games dating to December of 2011 and improved to 8-0 under coach Shaka Smart coming off back-to-back losses.

Xavier Munford, who entered the game second in the conference in scoring, finished with 17 points for Rhode Island (6-13, 1-5).

Vermont 49, Hartford 43 — Brian Voelkel scored 12 points and added five rebounds to lift the visiting Catamounts over the Hawks. Clancy Rugg added 9 points and seven rebounds for Vermont (14-7, 7-2 America East). Hartford (11-10, 4-4) was led by Mark Nwakamma with 12 points.

UNH 57, Maine 54 — Chandler Rhoads scored 18 points and added seven rebounds, and Chris Matagrano scored 16 points and had 7 rebounds and 2 assists and the Wildcats held off the Black Bears in Orono, Maine. Ferg Myrick added 13 points for New Hampshire (6-14, 2-6 America East). Alasdair Fraser had a game-high 20 points for the Black Bears, who fell to 8-13 and 3-5.

Women

La Salle 68, UMass 57 — Brittany Wilson scored 30 points and Shanel Harrison added 15 as the Explorers defeated the Minutewomen in Amherst. UMass senior center Jasmine Watson had 14 points and 11 rebounds as one of four Minutewomen in double figures.

Emily Mital and Jasmine Harris each had 11 points and Carolann Cloutier chipped in 10.

The Explorers (7-13 overall, 3-2 Atlantic 10) broke a 7-7 tie with a 10-3 run in the first quarter before UMass (3-18, 1-5) came back to pull within 2 at 17-15.

La Salle took a 27-23 lead at the half.

Holy Cross 51, Army 46 — Alex Smith scored 21 points and Amy Lepley added 12 to lift the Crusaders over the host Black Knights. Holy Cross (10-11, 2-4 Patriot League) took a 23-15 lead at the half, then had to hold off Army (15-6, 4-2) in the second half. The Black Knights were led by Jen Hazlett with 15 points, and Kelsey Minato, who added 11.

Hartford 60, Vermont 51 — Nikkia Smith and Daphne Elliott each scored 12 points to lift the Hawks over the Catamounts in Burlington, Vt. Hartford (14-7, 5-3 America East) forced Vermont into 30 turnovers and added 20 steals. Tierra Shumpert and Lauren Wheeler had 11 points each to lead Vermont (7-14, 4-4).

St. John’s 65, Providence 51 — Nadirah McKenith had a game-high 21 points and Briana Brown added 19 to lift the Red Storm over the Lady Friars in Providence. Symone Roberts and Danielle Pearson led Providence (6-14, 1-6 Big East) with 13 points each. St. John’s is 10-9 and 4-3.
