Mickelson just misses a 59

Phil Mickelson nearly became the sixth player in PGA history to shoot a 59 at a tour event on Thursday, settling for an 11-under-par 60 in the first round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open when his long birdie putt on the final hole rolled around the lip of the cup and stayed out. Mickelson matched his career low, which also came at TPC Scottsdale in 2005.

Mickelson, grouped with Jason Dufner and Rickie Fowler, began off the 10th tee and birdied his first four holes. After two pars, he ran off three straight birdies to make the turn at 7-under 29. On the front nine, Mickelson birdied three of his first four holes, and then had one birdie over his final five. He ended his round with a four-shot lead and a share of the course record.
