Led by a pair of junior guards, the 16th-ranked St. Mary’s girls’ basketball team defeated 12th-ranked Arlington Catholic Friday in Arlington, 58-48, sweeping the Cougars for the first time since joining the Catholic Central Large 15 years ago. The Spartans defeated Arlington Catholic, 47-42, in December.
Jenni Mucciaroni scored 18 points, and teammate Brianna Rudolph recorded 18 points and 12 rebounds in the victory.
Arlington Catholic jumped to a 9-1 lead, but Mucciaroni and Rudolph combined for 14 points in a 20-6 run to close out the first quarter and put the Spartans ahead for good.
“We got off to a tough start. Arlington is a tough place to play,” said St. Mary’s coach Jeff Newhall. “ I was very proud of how the girls responded.”
With six minutes remaining in the game, the Cougars pulled to within 4, but a Mucciaroni 3-pointer followed by Sharell Sanders’s 3-point play put the game out of reach.
Rudolph downplayed her big offensive game. “We pride ourselves on defense. We went out with aggression and played great D. Defense turns into offense,” she said.
St. Mary’s improved to 8-1 in the Catholic Central and 14-1 overall. Arlington Catholic fell to 6-3 and 9-4 overall.
