Sports log: Ex-NL Cy Young winner Webb retires


Former NL Cy Young winner Brandon Webb retired Monday, he announced in a statement through his agents. The 2006 winner was dominant in the middle of the decade with Arizona, but the 33-year-old righthander hadn’t appeared in the majors since 2009 because of chronic shoulder problems . . . Detroit agreed to a one-year, $6,725,000 contract with righthander Max Scherzer and avoided salary arbitration. Scherzer was 16-7 last season with a 3.74 and struck out 231. He was 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in the postseason, helping the Tigers reach the World Series . . . Oakland acquired former Red Sox infielder Jed Lowrie and righthander Fernando Rodriguez from Houston for first baseman Chris Carter and minor leaguers Brad Peacock and Max Stassi . . . The Giants claimed infielder Tony Abreu off waivers from the Royals . . . Prosecutors in Las Vegas are letting San Francisco Giants pitcher Sergio Romo off the hook in a misdemeanor case stemming from a New Year’s Day tiff with Transportation Security Administration agents at McCarran International Airport . . . The Red Sox will send out the equipment truck destined for for the club’s spring training home in Fort Myers Tuesday at noon. Fans are welcome to attend when the truck leaves from Gate D on Van Ness Street.
