New England roundup: Huskies fend off pesky ODU

Joel Smith scored 27 points and teamed with Jonathan Lee to hit late foul shots to give Northeastern a 79-74 overtime victory against Old Dominion Saturday in a Colonial Athletic Association game in Norfolk, Va.

The Huskies (16-8, 11-1) earned their 11th win in the last 12 games. But ODU (3-21, 1-11), which got a career-high 25 points from Dimitri Batten off the bench, nearly pulled off the upset.


The Huskies’ 11 CAA wins are their most since 2009-10 (14) and they are 5-0 in conference road games.

BU 79, Binghamton 58 — D.J. Irving scored 22 of his 27 points in the first half, made a career-high seven 3-pointers, and the visiting Terriers (13-11, 7-4 America East) defeated the Bearcats (3-21, 1-10) for the eighth straight time.

Irving, who scored just 7 points against Maine, made his first seven shots, including five from 3-point range, and tallied 19 of the Terriers’ first 29 points. Dom Morris made 6 of 7 shots for 13 points, John Papale had 12, and Maurice Watson Jr. dished out a career-high 13 assists for BU.

Binghamton (3-21, 1-10) led, 6-4, before Irving rattled off 14 straight points to give BU the lead for good, 18-6.

Vermont 67, Maryland-Baltimore County 55 — Clancy Rugg posted his third double-double in six games, and the visiting Catamounts (16-7, 9-2 America East) rolled over the Retrievers (6-18, 4-7) for their fourth straight win and eighth straight road victory.

Rugg, once a walk-on for the Catamounts, had 18 points and 10 rebounds in his eighth straight start. Trey Blue tallied 16 points and Luke Apfled added 13.


Maine 66, Albany 52 — Justin Edwards scored 16 points and Zarko Valjarevic added 13 to spark the host Black Bears to an America East victory over the Great Danes (18-8, 7-5).

Alasdair Fraser scored 11 and Jon McAllian chipped in 10 off the bench to help Maine (9-15, 4-7) snap a four-game losing streak.

Yale 69, Princeton 65 — Javier Duren scored 13 points and the Bulldogs snapped the host Tigers’ six-game winning streak. Austin Morgan and Sam Martin each scored 11 points for the Bulldogs (9-14, 3-3 Ivy).

Princeton (11-8, 4-1) also had its 21-game league home winning streak snapped.

Lehigh 68, Holy Cross 61 — Mackey McKnight made a season-high 11 free throws in 12 attempts and scored 22 points to help the Mountain Hawks (16-5, 7-1) kick off the second half of their Patriot League schedule with a win over the host Crusaders (10-13, 2-6).

Dave Dudzinski had 13 points and Malcolm Miller 10 for Holy Cross.
