Sports log: Electrical failure caused Super outage

An electrical device installed expressly to prevent a power outage caused the Super Bowl blackout, the stadium’s power company said as it took the blame for the outage at the Superdome that brought the game to a halt for more than a half-hour. Entergy New Orleans, the manufacturer of the device, released a statement implying the problem was not with the part but with how it was used. Officials said the relay performed with no problems during January’s Sugar Bowl and other earlier events, but has been removed and will be replaced . . . Nechole T. Thomas, whose car hit another stopped on the side of Interstate 10 outside New Orleans after the Super Bowl, killing Bryan and Alice Young, the uncle and aunt of 49ers tight end Delanie Walker, was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide and one count each of driving while intoxicated and reckless operation of a motor vehicle . . . Former Cowboys assistant Rob Ryan interviewed with the Saints for their vacant defensive coordinator job . . . One day after interviewing for the Saints’ defensive coordinator position, Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham withdrew from consideration . . . Ex-Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron is in talks with LSU to take over its offense . . . Charlotte’s City Council is backing a plan to give the Panthers nearly $144 million from a food and beverage tax hike to help pay for upgrades to Bank of America Stadium . . . Texans nose tackle Shaun Cody had microscopic back surgery for a lumbar disk herniation on Jan. 29 . . . The Panthers signed defensive tackle Colin Cole, an eight-year veteran who was out of the league the past two years.

Hill, Arizona agree to $35m extension

The Diamondbacks have reached a deal with second baseman Aaron Hill through 2016, adding three years and $35 million to his existing contract, which pays him $5.5 million this year . . . Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner says he’s concerned about the latest drug allegations swirling around third baseman Alex Rodriguez, but that the matter is being looked at by Major League Baseball. Steinbrenner also said there have been talks with second baseman Robinson Cano, a potential free agent after the season . . . The Cardinals agreed to a one-year deal with third baseman David Freese, avoiding arbitration . . . Righthanded reliever Brandon Lyon signed a one-year deal with the Mets.

76ers’ Richardson out for rest of year

76ers guard Jason Richardson will miss the rest of the season with a left knee injury that requires surgery. In 33 games, Richardson averaged 10.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.2 steals . . . Pistons rookie center Andre Drummond, who played at UConn, is expected to miss 4-6 weeks because of a stress fracture in his back . . . The Nets and Bobcats have discussed a trade that would send Charlotte guard Ben Gordon to Brooklyn for forward Kris Humphries, according to league sources . . .
