Thanks Dan...... I had no idea who this guy was and is. Great story! We are lucky to have him in Boston.
Compliments from Dan Shaughnessy. He must be getting a lot of sleep. Keep it up, Dan.
Terrific article and extraordinary guy.
This is really nice! Awesome writing from a great reporter.
Put down the Kool-Aid.
Sorry Dan but Larry is not returning your calls. Your friendship of 30 + years is over after your Tito hack job ....errr book.
Your no comment is a comment. Don't you know?
My "No comment" was in reference to Larry Lucchino's answers to Dan's two questions to Larry at yesterday's Red Sox news conference.
Btw both Dan and Tito know that THEO EPSTEIN was the source of the Tito smear job (pills and marital problems) from the Bob Hoelher article last September. Sadly you won't read that anywhere. The BWAA is very protective of their Golden Local Boy who did his best to destroy this team.
How do YOU know that, Shoney?
Please. Dan reaps the fiscal rewards of slamming Larry (deservedly IMO) in his book and now is allowed to print this blatant suck up piece trying to kiss an make up. I expect no less from Shank, but are there no editors who can say, "No" to pap like this? I need a shower. This is a disgraceful piece of brown-nosing.
You sound like a typical Boston sports fan. No wonder Carl Crawford didn't like Boston.
It is comments like this that make me happy I don't have to live in Boston.
HAVE A NICE DAY!
Valentine's day was yesterday. This is the work of a unfaithful lover begging for another chance. How does this sicken me? Let me count the ways...

What in the hell did I just read? Is this the equivalent of being tarred and feathered in the public square by Larry; having to write embarassing pandering drivel under your byline?
Waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Ha! Winner of the best comment.
Absolutely. It's a Shaugnessy setup in classic troll mode.
Years of dumping all over Lucchino and now Shagnasty writes him a love note. Excuse me while I purge myself.
I was intrigued by the Watergate piece of trivia. No wonder Steinbrenner hated him so much. Nixon, Steinbrenner, and the Yankees. Perfect together.
Seems like no one posting here got the gist of the article. The entire article was just a lead-in to the tongue in cheek last line,
"In Earl Weaver style, Lucchino loves a good argument, has thick skin, and doesn’t take things personally.", which refers to Lucchino's terse
"No comment" responses to all of Shaughnessy's questions during the press conference.
This is Shaughnessy's clever way of poking fun at Lucchino while being able to deny it, as he can claim he meant every word of it, including the last line.
Glad someone else got it. Don't love Shaughnessy, but really a brilliant approach to the situation.
Exactly. This is more of Dan being a dink.
I was going to write what cch108 said. It was obviously ironic and satirical - whatsa matter wit yuze guys!
He's done some good things ....in many different places. i.e. he gets up and moves before he gets stale and tiresome. Its probably time to move on from Boston before he sullies himself further
You're talking about Shaughnessy, right?
Totally agree. Larry's done some great stuff here but, like every other place he's been, he's reached his shelf life. His pit bull personality and lust for power/control take a toll on people. I think the Sox can't really change their culture with Larry at the helm. He's too stubborn, as he admits, and too much of an egomaniac (probably deserved given his accomplishments) to change his way of doing business.
I don't think it will work Dan. Larry will continue to no comment you. He is one vengeful guy and the dark lord of the Red Sox.
So, Danno, you got one shot in with your last line. That doesn't change the fact that you're sucking up.
You forgot a couple, BTW:
How he sold Terry down the river
How he lied about the consecutive sellouts
how he pushed for bobby (no love lost) valentine
How he drove theo out of town
how he keeps certain reporters in his hip pocket
How he sends condenscending, laughable letters to his season ticket owners.
Very little in life is black or white. It's all about the grey areas. It's clear there is no love lost between Shaughnessy and Luccino. They may not be on each other's Christmas card lists, but they have to play in the same sandbox.
It's said that Irish Alzheimers is where you forget everything but the grudge.
Shaugnessy doesn't have Alzheimers.
You so funny, Dan.
Love him or hate him, ya gotta admit the guy's a real dude who accomplished, and continues to accomplish, amazing things. Most of us readers don't have nearly his resume, and his work for charity is a lesson for us all. Dan, you saved the best line for last! Hilarious!
He doesn't look like Tommy Lee Jones. He is very attractive. Tommy Lee Jones is not good looking at all. You didn't score points with that remark Dan.
Now that I think it over I believe that Dan got played by Theo. There is no way Dan would have propped up boy wonder the way he did in his book if he knew all along that Theo was the mole. I think Shaugnessy figured (and maybe with the help of Theo) that Larry was the mole. I think its pretty clear that the moves made prior to the gorilla suit, when Theo had to go through Larry, were much better than when Larry was neutered by John Henry and Theo was left to make his own decisions. When you look back its really unbelievable how ungrateful Theo actually is. He would NEVER have been given the opportunity to be a GM at his age if it were not for Larry, thats not disputable, how does he thank him...by crying to Peter Gammons about everything Larry did, and turning Tito and the rest of the team against Larry. Then after John Henry gives theo total control of baseball moves, and Theo makes a complete fool of himself, Theo blames John Henry for doing a NESN market analysis and forcing him to make bad acquisitions???Really. The final chapter of the Theo Epstein book has yet to be written but I doubt you will see terms like 'boy wonder' and 'rockstar' more like backstabber, liar, ungrateful, conniving and the like... BTW the book is worth it.
Outstanding commentary Emmett.
You get it.
Sadly far too many spawts fans can't think for themsevles.
They rely on the likes of Felger and Mazz to give them their "truth".
Ding, ding, ding ... we have a winner. Right on, Emmett.
I met Dan at the USC ND Bush push game and he was great. We talked sports like 2 guys sharing a beer. I did however cancel my mlb package this year. I will watch the sox from a distance but I am not spending my money on the team of malarchy they are trying to sell to me, you and the whole nation. The best thing about this season will be is that maybe it will get back to us real fans and lose the tourists and groupies. Just time for the intense, beer drinking, peanut eating, and yankee haters to take back over.
Dan: Take it from a Calabrian, for Larry you no longer exist. Forget about it. Move on to a local syncophant for your information. And by the way, how about the players shut up and play, the owners pay, the fans cheer, and sports writers go to the games and comment on the play, not look for gossip to feed the talk shows and their favorite target of the month.
