FORT MYERS, Fla. — He was a catcher, now he is a first baseman. He had a three-year, $39 million contract, now he has a one-year, $5 million contract. He was a 31-year-old athlete with more fortune and glory ahead of him. Now he hopes to be able to walk when he is 50.
Say hello to Red Sox free agent acquisition Mike Napoli.

Management ....... Boston Redsox ???????????????????????????????????
AVS is a chronic desease. It will not effect Mike Napoli this season. By sighning him on a year to year basis, and with a small number, the Sox are protected. Are their hip replacements in his future ? Maybe, but that is not around the corner. Are hip replacemnts effective ? You bet they are.
"Now he hopes to be able to walk when he is 50" is exageration.
And the Sox had no interest in Nick Swisher. I feel for Napoli, but the Sox need to do better at acquiring talent.
Red Sox management has not exactly had a great run lately and they certainly deserve a great deal more scrutiny at current ticket prices. Still, it is a little hard to blame them entirely for going a long way down the road with on someone who turns out to have a remarkably rare condition. Especially one that would not make him look very obviously different from any other player all the way up to the medical imaging studies.
