It’s hard to get excited about these Red Sox

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The air is warm and fresh. Everybody is in a good mood. Players in the clubhouse are especially relaxed. No one is looking for snitches or rolling their eyes at the mention of the new manager.

There were not a lot of fans for the first week of Red Sox workouts. We witnessed none of the Beatlemania of 2005. The Red Sox were not visited by many members of the national media. No sign of the ESPN bus. Sox workouts were not featured on live television. There was no daily presence from members of the New York newspapers.

Wow!!  Talk about a columnist who is out of touch and has zero clue about this fanbase.

Of course scrappy sells in Boston in 2013. Witness the Bruins and the Celtics.

Both are scrappy teams who succeed because of grittiness and hard work.

Kevin Garnett and Brad Marchand are two of the most popular athletes in Boston

Exactly how would you describe their game, Danno??

Is there a more popular Red Sox player than Dustin "scrappy" Pedroia??

BIG swing and a miss with this column, Dan.

Yes the Sox have many questions.

But sadly for you Danno not every one of those questions will have a negative answer this season.

This Sox team is going to be much better than many think they are.

Dan, you're in for a loooooong hot summer of good Red Sox baseball and a cold shoulder from Larry Lucchino.

But look on the bright side Danny.

You can always follow the Cubs and Indians.

$170m and their president calls them scrappy. Shank is right on. I Cannot wait for Lucchino's all star break mea culpa to the season ticket customers.

I am excited for all the reasons your not Dan. Maybe it is time for you to do something else. Springtime, new season, some new faces. less attention to and from the Yankees. Nothing in this world is worth anything without being earned. Let's see what this team can do.

You got that right, Dan.

They won't be boring to me.  I'd have to actually watch them for that to happen.

So you just read the articles?

they play at that concert place, right?

Just got done reading baseball writer Bill Madden in the NY Daily News.

You'll never guess who's whining to Bill.....  ha ha ha ha ha

My goodness these media types can dish it out but they certainly can't take it.

Typical Shaughnessy knocking them before they even take the field.  Too bad we can't trade him.

The sky is falling, Chicken Little. Dan is right that there are some major concerns with this team.  As a fan that attends 20 or so games a year and watches or listens to almost all 162, all I ask for is a team that leaves it all on the field, puts on a good show (because that's what it is), and shows its character and characters. The Sox organization is making an effort to repair what was broken and I appreciate that. The reality is that you can't win the World Series every year. Let's face the facts: It is a rebuilding, or bridge year. Get over it.  Dan will not be happy this year because there will be little negative drama except what he makes up or blows up. Since he burnt his bridges with the organization with the Tito book, he won't be writing any tell-all books (that actually tell nothing) about the Sox. Find something else to do with your spare time, Dan.

And when has your glass ever been half-full Dan?

Dan

I agree with you 100%. There's not much to be excited about in 2013.

Great summer for yard work. I cancelled the mlb package.

I'm always excited about a new season and wish the Sox the best of luck. I like the 'scrappy' & 'griddy' playethe the Sfish ace on their roster. I do have to agree with The Curly-Headed One that pitching starting pitchers will be the major key to success or failure. The bullpen is so deep that I think the mentality here is to get the starters to the 6th inning with the sox ahead, tied, or losing by a few runs, then the bullpen will be 'lights-out'....Go Sox!

well maybe the pink hats will finally be gone. I would rather watch team of hard worker then team thay have had the last few years. We shall see the real baseball follower go to the games now.

Dan

Stop tring to make a controversy with every story

Lay off Ellsbury - I hope to see you with a shaved head next season Dan.

"Show a little faith, there's magic in the night, you ain't a beauty but hey you're all right, and that's all right with me."  Lean into faith of the Boss.  The magic of Spring training is that we have no idea how the team will do this year - let us hold on to the mystery of "maybe this year" a little longer...

Fair criticism from Shaughnessy for a change. Usually we just get slash and burn. Today he makes valid points. But there's no reason to believe the pitching can't rebound and we know this team will score runs. Anyone who wants to give the Sox a chance rather than saying they suck before the first pitch is thrown might enjoy the season. Personally I'm going to be pulling for Lackey the most out of all of them!

What's really hard to get excited about is your column. You haven't been the same since you were the last person on earth to realize that Roger was a cheater. Actually you weren't much good before that.

Dan has jumped off the bandwagon. Any wagers on how many times he will jump on and off over the course of the season?

OK, you can't get excited about the Sox.  So you'll stop writing about them, right?  (Please?)

I guess when Dan's suck up article on Larry did not thaw things out, Dan decided to lash out again.

Regardless of what one might think of the author; he is right. The Sox are going to suck big time. They have a mediocre lineup and a bad starting rotation. A decent bullpen will help. But won't make it to the playoffs. Just look at who they are putting in the field. It stinks. A bunch of has beens and a couple of would be fire plugs. Get ready to be dissapointed this season. Big time.

The Sox don't have a mediocre lineup and they don't have a bad rotation.

I used to enjoy reading Dan's work but he hasn't gotten so negative about all Boston sports I can't stand it anymore. Maybe Dan should become a free agent and move to a new city like he believes Ellsbury will next year and brighten or dim the world of newspaper readers in that city, say Seattle? Maybe Phoenix? How about Milwaukee? Not sounding good Dan, why not try Cincinnati? Just go somehwere and leave us with something other than your negativity.

Perhaps Dan should head to Clevland to be with his new BFF Tito. Or perhaps join his other BFF Theo in Chitown??

Shank has plenty of options to escpae his Boston misery.
