Jack Reidy scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and Matt Gentile stopped 21 shots as Scituate, the 20th-seeded hockey team, defeated fourth-seeded Middleborough, 2-1, on Thursday at the Bridgewater Ice Arena in the first round of the Division 3 South tournament.
The Sailors (11-8-3) scored the game’s first goal midway through the second period. On a deflection, junior center Jamie Murray stuffed the puck into the right side of the net.
“The first period and early in the second went well for us,’’ said Scituate coach Mike Breen. “We were playing all three of our lines and they were only playing two and they were wearing out.
“They have a great line of scorers, so by playing three lines changes their pace of play and takes the edge out from their game.”
The Sachems (15-5-1) tied the score in the second period when a wide slap shot ricocheted off a Scituate defender and into the top right corner of the net.
The Sailors got the winner when Reidy unleashed a wrist shot from the point that hit a Sachems stick and deflected into the net.
