Roundup: Northeastern women win

Senior Deanna Kerkhof’s 24 points, including an 8-for-8 effort from the free throw line, led five players in double figures as the Northeastern women’s basketball team beat Hofstra, 88-81, Wednesday night at Solomon Court.

The Huskies (17-11, 10-7 Colonial) clinched the fourth seed in the upcoming league tournament and will face the Pride (13-16, 9-9), which is locked into the fifth seed, again in the first round.

Kashaia Cannon and Christine Huber added 14 points and five rebounds apiece in the victory.

Jewel Tunstull contributed 16 points, five rebounds and three blocks, and Amencie Mercier had 10 points and eight assists.

Hofstra got a 21-point, 17-rebound effort from Shante Evans.

Men’s basketball

South Florida 65, UConn 51 — Martino Brock scored 18 points and Victor Rudd had 17 to pace the Bulls (12-17, 3-14 Big East) past the Huskies (19-10, 9-8) in Tampa, Fla.

UConn got 23 points from DeAndre Daniels.

Lafayette 77, Holy Cross 54 — Seth Hinrichs scored 20 points and Tony Johnson added 19 as the Leopards (18-14) defeated the Crusaders (12-18) in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League tournament at Easton, Pa.

Dave Dudzinski posted game highs of 22 points and eight rebounds for No. 7 Holy Cross.

Mount St. Mary’s 75, Bryant 69 — Rashad Whack scored 19 points and the fifth-seeded Mountaineers (17-13) won their eighth straight, rallying from an 8-point second-half deficit to defeat the No. 4 seed Bulldogs (19-11) in the quarterfinals of the Northeast Conference tournament.

Alex Francis led Bryant with 25 points.

Long Island 91, Quinnipiac 83 — C.J. Garner scored 30 points and the No. 3 seed Blackbirds (18-13) rallied to topple the sixth seed Bobcats (15-16) in the quarterfinals of the Northeast Conference tournament at New York.

Ousmane Drame led Quinnipiac with 23 points off the bench.

Wagner 72, Central Conn. 50 — Jonathon Williams had 20 points to lead the No. 2 seed Seahawks (19-11) past the No. 7 Blue Devils (13-17) in the quarterfinals of the Northeast Conference tournament at New York.

Kyle Vinales led the Central Conn. with 23 points.

Saint Joseph’s 81, URI 44 — C.J. Aiken scored 15 points and Ronald Roberts had 13 points and 11 rebounds as the Hawks (17-11, 8-7 Atlantic-10) beat the Rams (8-20, 3-12) in Philadelphia.

Nikola Malesevic and Andre Malone led URI with 10 points each.

Men’s hockey

Bowdoin 5, UMass-Dartmouth 2 — Jay Livermore and John McGinnis each had a goal and an assist as the No. 5 Polar Bears (23-3-2) beat the Corsairs (12-8-7) in the first round of the NCAA Division 3 tournament in Brunswick, Maine.

Evangelos Stefanou and Casey Skolnik scored for UMass-Dartmouth.

Steve Messina made 20 saves in the win, and Ryan Williams made 51 in defeat.

Bowdoin will play at No. 7 Utica in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Babson 6, Wentworth 1 — Troy Starrett and Jay Haseley scored two goals apiece and the 10th-ranked Beavers (18-6-5) beat the No. 15 Leopards (16-9-3) in first round of the NCAA Division 3 tournament in Wellesley.

Babson plays at No. 2 Norwich in the quarterfinals Saturday night at 7.
