Malden Catholic shuts out Springfield Cathedral

STONEHAM — Ara Nazarian contributed two goals for the second straight game, helping Malden Catholic beat Springfield Cathedral, 4-0, to advance to the second round of the Super 8 tournament at Stoneham Arena.

Malden Catholic’s defense, led by Casey Fitzgerald and John McLean, used a physical play that stymied the Panthers, who only got out four shots in the final frame. Malden Catholic advances to the Super 8 semifinals for the sixth straight year as they look to defend their back-to-back titles in the Division 1A tournament.


After a scoreless first period, Springfield Cathedral came out strong to start the second period but could not sustain the pace and ultimately the Lancers gained control of the game. Malden Catholic outshot Springfield Cathedral, 12-6, in the period and got one through at the 9:55 mark when an Austin Goldstein shot was banged home on the doorstep by Matt Filipe.

In the third period, Nazarian blasted home a rebound from the slot to put Malden Catholic up, 2-0, just 48 seconds into the final frame. He got his second score not too long later, a short-handed goal from teammates Fitzgerald and Michael Iovanna. It was Nazarian’s third short-handed goal in the best-of-three series.

Malden Catholic will play the winner of the BC High-Catholic Memorial series, which is tied 1-1, in the semifinals.
