Roundup: Notre Dame women win on late layup

Natalie Achonwa hit a layup with 1.8 seconds left to lift No. 2 Notre Dame (31-1) to its first Big East women’s basketball tournament championship with a 61-59 victory over third-ranked Connecticut Tuesday night at XL Center in Hartford.

Skylar Diggins stole an errant pass from Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis with 8 seconds remaning, and after dribbling through a few defenders, found Achonwa for the uncontested lay-in.

Kayla McBride scored 23 points to lead the Irish, while Jewell Loyd had 16 and Diggins 12.

Stefanie Dolson had 18 points and Breanna Stewart 16 for UConn (29-4).

The loss ended a run of 19 seasons that UConn had won either the regular season or postseason league title.

Harvard 71, Columbia 26 — Victoria Lippert scored 14 points, Christine Clark had 13, and Elle Hagedorn 10 as the Crimson (20-8, 11-3 Ivy League) crushed the Lions (5-23, 3-11) at Lavietes Pavilion.

It was Harvard’s 14th straight home victory, giving it its first unbeaten season at home since 1997-98.

Summit League final — Alexis Yackley missed two free throws with 5 seconds left and a 3-pointer as time expired as South Dakota State (25-7) hung on to beat South Dakota (17-15), 56-53 in Sioux Falls.

Ashley Eide scored 7 of her 10 points in the final 5½ minutes for the victorious Jackrabbits.

Men’s basketball

Big East semifinals — Fuquan Edwin scored 17 points, including the final 6 in regulation, and Seton Hall (15-17) beat South Florida (12-19), 46-42, in overtime in the first round of the Big East tournament at Madison Square Garden. Gene Teague added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the 12th-seeded Pirates . . . Wally Judge had a season-high 20 points to go with 10 rebounds, leading Rutgers (15-15) to a 76-57 victory over DePaul (11-21) in the other first-round tilt.

Northeast Conference final — C.J. Garner scored a career-high 31 points and Long Island (20-13) punched its ticket for the NCAA Tournament with a 91-70 win over Mount St. Mary’s (18-14) in New York

Jamal Olasewere added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Blackbirds.

Sam Prescott scored 21 points for the Mountaineers.

Horizon final — Erik Buggs scored a career-high 22 points and Will Bogan added 14 as host Valparaiso (26-7) closed with an 18-4 run to rally past Wright State (21-12), 62-54.

Summit final — Nate Wolters had 27 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists to lead South Dakota State (25-9) past North Dakota State (24-9), 73-67, in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Jordan Dykstra added 18 points and seven boards for the Jackrabbits.
