Sports log: Nerlens Noel is ‘doing fine’ after knee surgery

Kentucky center and Everett native Nerlens Noel, who was projected to be an NBA lottery pick, is ‘‘doing fine’’ after surgery Tuesday on his left knee to repair a torn ACL. Wildcats coach John Calipari provided the update in a post on his Facebook account Wednesday. He said Noel called him after Tuesday’s operation, which was performed by orthopedic surgeon James Andrews in Gulf Breeze, Fla. Noel’s rehabilitation is expected to take 6-8 months . . . Michael Cooper quit as the University of Southern California women’s basketball coach after four seasons . . . University of Connecticut women’s hockey coach Heather Linstad resigned. Linstad built the program at UConn. She was hired when the team was established for the 2000-01 season. She has a career record of 322-290-31 in her 13 seasons at Connecticut and eight at Northeastern, ranking sixth on the NCAA Division 1 wins list.
