SCORE: Marlins 5, Red Sox 1
BREAKDOWN: The Sox had a 1-0 lead through six innings. Daniel Bard allowed three in the seventh and lefthander Ryan-Rowland Smith two more in the ninth. Daniel Pertusati drove in four runs for Miami.
THUMBS UP: Jon Lester, Andrew Miller and Andrew Bailey held the Marlins to four hits over the first six innings and struck out six. … Jonny Gomes was 2 for 4 with a home run. … Will Middlebrooks walked twice. … Jose Iglesias (1 for 2) is hitting .283 this spring. He was picked off, however.
THUMBS DOWN: Bard may have punched his ticket to Pawtucket by allowing three runs on three hits and a walk in the seventh inning. He has given up six earned runs in his last three outings and that doesn’t include a rocky inning in a minor league game. His control is wavering again.
MEDICAL REPORT: The Sox will leave lefthanded relievers Craig Breslow (shoulder) and Franklin Morales (lower back) in extended spring training when the team breaks camp on Saturday. Both have been slow to return from their injuries and it’s uncertain when they will be ready for games.
AROUND THE BASES: Pedro Ciriaco, who had back spasms, played in his first game since March 14. Ciriaco will be on the Opening Day roster as a backup infielder. … The Sox were 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base. … Forbes magazine valued the Red Sox at 1.31 billion, third in the majors behind the Yankees ($2.3 billion) and the Dodgers ($1.61 billion). … The Sox have three more games in spring training, all against the Twins.
NEXT GAME: The Sox host the Twins at 7:05 p.m Thursday. Clay Buchholz will start with Alfredo Aceves, Joel Hanrahan and Koji Uehara to follow. Minnesota will start righthander Kevin Correia.
