Roundup: Lincoln-Sudbury coach wins No. 200

Lincoln-Sudbury boys’ lacrosse coach Brian Vona won his 200th career game in a 9-8 win over Concord-Carlisle on Thursday night.

Vona declined to comment on what the milestone meant to him, though.

“I don’t care about that,” he said. “I want to talk about the game.” And the 14th-year Warriors coach was more than happy to talk about his defense.

Vona raved about the No. 6-ranked Warriors’ back line, which withstood a final-minute attack from the No. 3 Patriots to preserve the win in the semifinals of the Coaches Challenge Cup at Andover High School.

“We’re playing really good defense,” he said. “Our defense is playing great, and we’re really starting to jell as a defensive unit. It was really outstanding today.”

Cohasset 14, Norwood 4 — Nick Tangherlini led the Skippers with three goals and three assists and Cole Kissick had three goals and two assists.

Waltham 8, Natick 4 — Senior Robert Concetti had five goals.

Watertown 18, Triton 6 — Junior Joe Kelland had five goals and four assists for the Raiders.

Marblehead 17, Peabody 12 — Senior Ian Maag had seven goals and three assists for the Magicians.

Scituate 6, Weston 5 — Senior Tucker Ciessau led the Sailors (4-4) with four goals and an assist.

Medfield 7, Xaverian 4 — Junior midfielder Matt Crowell recorded three goals and three assists and senior captain Andrew Melvin added two goals and an assist.

Girls’ lacrosse

Dover-Sherborn 11, Scituate 9 — Sophomore Holly Bertschmann had four goals and an assist to lead the host Raiders (5-0). Senior goalie Crickett Wemyss had 10 saves.

Manchester Essex 14, Swampscott 3 — Junior Brittany Smith had three goals and two assists for the Hornets.

Gann Academy 15, Waring 2 — Junior captain Eleanor Lustig had five goals, including the 100th of her career, and Emily Friend, last year’s IGC MVP, had four goals and five assists.

Softball

Defending Division 1 state champion and top-ranked Milford will play at Hopkinton Friday at 12:30 p.m. in a matchup that will put two impressive streaks on the line.

Milford (6-0) is riding a 31-game win streak and is led by Kentucky-bound pitcher Shannon Smith, the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year. Smith threw no-hitters in her past two games.

Hopkinton is 4-0 and has a 24-game home winning streak. Hopkinton is led by sophomore pitcher Alissa Karjel, who is 3-0 this spring and 11-0 the past two years.

The game is being dedicated to former Apponequet softball coach and Stoughton athletic director Peter Looney, with all proceeds going to the Looney Legacy Foundation to support melanoma research. Looney died of melanoma in 2011.

Norwood 5, Boston Latin 2 — Senior McKenna Lane drove in three runs with a triple and a home run and Jill Shepherd struck out six for the Mustangs (5-1).

Winthrop 2, Latin Academy 0 — Sophomore Mora Lanza gave up just three hits and walked none in a complete game for the Vikings.

Baseball

Dedham 6, Foxborough 4 —Freshman Matthew Malone pitched a complete game to earn the Marauders’ first win.

Revere 8, East Bridgewater 7 — Junior captain Tommy Portrait hit a walk-off homer in the seventh to bring in two runs for the Patriots.

North Quincy 11, Milton 4 — The Red Raiders won the Quincy-North Quincy April Vacation Tournament.

Newton North 8, Xaverian 4 — Brendan Ryan pitched a complete game, giving up eight hits and striking out five. He also had a home run and two RBIs.

Chelsea 10, Notre Dame (Lawrence) 1 — Red Devils junior Pedro Hernandez had three hits and six RBIs.
