A brief look at the world of golf

Player of the week

Derek Ernst. How improbable was Ernst’s win at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow? He was driving toward Athens, Ga., to play in a Tour event when he got a phone call saying that, as the fourth alternate, he had a spot in the Wells Fargo field. Then he went out and won, overcoming Phil Mickelson, Lee Westwood, and Rory McIlroy, then beating David Lynn in a playoff. Ernst, a 22-year-old rookie from UNLV, arrived in Charlotte, N.C., ranked 1,207th in the world. After his victory, he’s up to No. 123.
