Sports Log: Manchester United replaces Alex Ferguson with Everton’s David Moyes

Soccer Everton’s Moyes replaces Ferguson

Everton manager David Moyes will take over from Alex Ferguson at Manchester United — after being recommended for the job by his predecessor. United gave Moyes one of the most coveted and toughest jobs in soccer — succeeding Britain’s most successful manager at Old Trafford. ‘‘It’s a great honor to be asked to be the next manager of Manchester United,’’ Moyes said in a statement Thursday. United said the 50-year-old Moyes was given a six-year deal and will take charge of the newly crowned Premier League champions July 1 . . . Brazil will play Portugal in an international friendly at Gillette Stadium. The game is tentatively slated for Monday, Sept. 9.
