Red Sox lose as Lester is ineffective

Game over The Rays took advantage of a lackluster Jon Lester and pounded the Red Sox for 10 hits and eight runs. Lester walked seven batters and had no feel for pitching tonight. Desmond Jennings hit two homers Evan Longoria and Matt Joyce one each.The game was played before 16,870 in 3:06. Roberto Hernandez got the win for the Rays. Reminded me of a younger Fausto Carmona.

Bottom 8th: Rays 8, Red Sox 3 - Jose De La Torre is serving his purpose - keeping John Farrell from using his main bullpen pieces. De La Torre allowed an infield single and a walk, but the Sox got a pickoff to help the pitchers cause.

Top 8th: Rays 8, Red Sox 3 - Dustin Pedroia was hit with a pitch and went to second on Ryan Roberts’ error on David Ortiz’ hard-hit ground ball. But Mike Napili struck out, Nava tapped back to the pitcher and Stephen Drew popped to center.

Bottom 7th: Rays 8, Red Sox 3 - After De La Torre retired the first two batters, Joyce walked. he stole second and went to third on a terrible throw by David Ross, who seemed to lose a grip on the ball which sailed to center field. Farrell and the trainer came out to check on Ross. De La Torre got out of the inning.

Top 7th: Rays 8, Red Sox 3 - Jose Iglesias reached on a bloop single to right. Ellsbury knocked into a double-play and Victorino popped out.

Bottom 6th: Rays 8, Red Sox 3 - De La Torre settled down and retired the side.

Top 6th: Rays 8, Red Sox 3 - After a David Ortiz single Napoli (strikeout) and Nava went down. Stephen Drew walked but David Ross popped out.

Bottom 5th: Rays 8, Red Sox 3 - Not Jon Lester’s night. All seven runs came after two outs. He’s out after 4-2/3 inning allowing eight hits and seven walks. Matt Joyce’s two-run homer after Lester had picked off a runner was his last batter. Jose De La Torre is in. Lester’s last five starts: 30 IP, 38H, 23ER, 18BB, 6HR. De La Torre surrenders a solo homer to Desmond Jennings, his second of the night. He then walks Sean Rodriguez, but gets out of the inning.

Top 5th: Rays 5, Red Sox 3 - Nothing doing for the Sox.

Bottom 4th: Rays 5, Red Sox 3 - Evan Longoria homered to the opposite field.

Top 4th: Rays 4, Red Sox 3 - Hat trick for the Red Sox as Roberto Hernandez shows flashes of Fausto Carmona and strikes out the side.

Bottom 3rd: Rays 4, Red Sox 3 - The Rays evened it up and took the lead on a Ryan Roberts single up the middle after Ben Zobrist singled and Yunel Escobar walked. Lester had struck out the tough James Loney for the second out, but Roberts came through. Jose Molina blooped a single to center to score the go-ahead run. The Rays loaded the bases when Matt Joyce reached on an an infield hit, but Desmond Jennings grounded out to end the inning.

Top 3rd: Red Sox 3, Rays 2 - The Red Sox re-took the lead. After Jose Iglesias extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a single between third and second and Ellsbury reached on a fielder’s choice where James Loney fielded his grounder and threw wide of second as both runners were safe, Shane Victorino bunted them over. After an intentional walk to David Ortiz, Mike Napoli blooped a single over shortstop to score two runs.

Bottom 2nd: Rays 2, Red Sox 1 - Leadoff hitter Desmond Jennings belted a solo homer to leftcenter that just scaled the wall, right after Matt Joyce hit a deep ball to center, caught by Ellsbury.

Top 2nd: Red Sox 1, Rays 1 - A Daniel Nava leadoff single was erased on Stephen Drew’s double-play ball. David Ross struck out.

Bottom 1st: Red Sox 1, Rays 1 - Jon Lester had loads of trouble with command so he’s fortunate to have escaped with one run. He walked four batters, including James Loney with the bases loaded to force in the run. He got the benefit of a double play and also made a nice fielding play on Ryan Roberts who shot one up the middle which Lester snared or else it would have cost him two runs.

Top 1st: Red Sox 1, Rays 0 - The top of the Red Sox order generated a run when Jacoby Ellsbury singled and stole second and went to third on Shane Victorino’s single. Dustin Pedroia’s foul fly ball in the right field corner, scored Ellsbury. Victorino stole second base, but Roberto Hernndez was able to retire the next two batters to limit the damage.
