What They Were Thinking

Nuns cheering on the Red Sox at Fenway Park

Every Sunday, Boston Globe photographer Stan Grossfeld asks the subject of one of his photos to explain what’s happening in the shot.

Who’s up today: Sister Gertrude Mary (right) and Sister Lorraine of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Somerville, who cheered as David Ortiz hit a line drive double off the Green Monster to score Shane Victorino on June 26 at Fenway Park. They were part of Nun Day at Fenway Park, a tradition dating back to the Cardinal Cushing/Tom Yawkey era of the 1960s. There were 220 nuns from around the state who were guests of the Red Sox.
