Alex Rodriguez had said he was hoping to join the Yankees for Tuesday’s game against the Rangers.

BOSTON — New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez isn’t ready to rejoin the team any time soon.

The team said in a statement issued on Sunday night that Rodriguez has a Grade 1 strain of his left quadriceps muscle and won’t be able to return this week in Texas, as had been planned.

Instead, Rodriguez will return to Tampa, Fla., ‘‘for rest and rehabilitation.’’ The three-time AL MVP will remain on the disabled list. The team said it may petition Major League Baseball for an additional rehab assignment because of the new injury.

Rodriguez had said he was hoping to return for Tuesday night’s game against the Rangers.
