Golf is definitely a “touch” sport, with players using different swings and different ways to play different shots. The better touch you have, especially around the greens, the better you’ll play. Bob Beach, the head professional at Braintree Municipal Golf Course, offers a suggestion on how to improve your touch when faced with a short chip.

Beach writes:

“The club of choice for many golfers when playing a short chip shot is either a pitching wedge or sand wedge. To improve your touch, try a 15-20-foot downhill chip shot using a 7-iron. The 7-iron will initially feel like too much club to play this shot, but with a few minor adjustments will work fine.

“The first adjustment is to choke down on the grip an inch or two. The second adjustment is to hold the club as lightly as possible. This will increase your feel and sensitivity. The final adjustment is to swing the club as short as possible, both going back and coming through. The compactness of the swing, along with the light grip pressure, will enable the golfer to feel the right distance and execute the shot. There is less going on with this little swing, which increases your chances of success.”
