Brendan Steele leads Canadian Open

Brendan Steele topped the Canadian Open leaderboard Thursday at 7-under-par 65, birdieing five of the first seven holes on his back nine in Oakville, Ontario.

Matt Kuchar, a two-time winner this year, was a stroke back along with Scott Gardiner and Scott Brown.

Seniors — At Southport, England, Gene Sauers mastered a stiff breeze to shoot a 3-under 67 for a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Senior British Open.

Four players are at 68, among them 2010 champion Bernhard Langer.

US Girls’ Junior — Megan Khang of Rockland made a 4-foot birdie putt on the 20th hole to defeat eighth-seeded Hannah O’Sullivan of Paradise Valley, Ariz., in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Khang, 15, then defeated Maddie Szeryk of Allen, Texas, 3 and 2, in the afternoon to reach Friday’s quarterfinals.

Ouimet Memorial — At Wollaston Golf Club, Matt Parziale of Brockton is in a three-way tie for the lead at 3-under 139 after two rounds with Cody Paladino and John Flaherty, both of Connecticut.
