Alex Rodriguez warmed up on the Fenway field before Friday night’s Red Sox-Yankees game.

In his first appearance at Fenway Park this season — and first after being suspended 211 games by baseball commissioner Bud Selig — Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was roundly booed when he came to bat in the first inning Friday night.

NESN analyst Dennis Eckersley, a former Red Sox player, said it was the loudest he had ever heard a player booed at Fenway Park.

Once the jeers subsided, Rodriguez lined into a double play off Red Sox starter Felix Doubront to end the inning.

The embattled Yankees star has been handed the lengthy suspension for his involvement with the defunct Biogenesis clinic in Miami, which Major League Baseball believes distributed performance-enhancing substances to about a dozen players. Rodriguez also was punished, Selig has said, for obstructing baseball’s investigation into the case.

Rodriguez has appealed the suspension, and he is allowed to play until the appeal process is concluded.

Rodriguez missed most of this season recovering from hip surgery, returning for a series in Chicago against the White Sox Aug. 5.

At his first home game in Yankee Stadium, Aug. 9 against the Tigers, Rodriguez wasn’t exactly welcomed with open arms there, either. There were some fans cheering for him, but he was booed in pregame introductions and booed again when he came to the plate. He struck out in his first at-bat before the home crowd, and was booed again.
