School football roundup: Barnstable is a spoiler

For the fourth straight week, the top-ranked team fell as No. 20 Barnstable took down Xaverian, 15-14, on Friday night.

Senior Dereck Pacheco nailed a 32-yard field goal with 1:36 remaining to lift the host Red Raiders (2-1) to their second straight victory.

“[The win] feels great,” said Barnstable coach Chris Whidden. “The kids have put in the work. It’s great to see them getting out of it what they put in. It’s an exciting night for Barnstable High School, an exciting night for the community.”

Trailing, 14-6, midway through the fourth quarter, Barnstable pulled within 2 on a 16-yard pass from Kristian Lucashensky to Derek Estes. The Red Raiders then fumbled the 2-point rush attempt.

The Hawks (2-1) were unable to score on the next drive and gave the ball back to Barnstable, which drove to the Xaverian 15-yard line behind a 40-yard strike from Lucashensky to senior Colby Blaze.

Facing a fourth and five, Barnstable elected to try a field goal, even though Pacheco had missed an extra point earlier in the game.

The Red Raiders stopped Xaverian, which had taken down former No. 1s Everett and Bridgewater-Raynham the last two weeks, on fourth down to end the game.

Xaverian opened the scoring when quarterback Jake Farrell found running back Shayne Kaminski for a 54-yard touchdown with 4:22 left in the second quarter. The Red Raiders responded less than three minutes later when Lucashensky delivered a 23-yard TD to Blaze to make it 7-6.

The Hawks upped their lead to 14-6 when Kaminski ran one in from 5 yards.
