School roundup: Duxbury runs away in field hockey

A hat trick by senior Lily Smith was more than enough for No. 14 Duxbury in a 7-0 field hockey road win against Pembroke on Wednesday afternoon.

Smith now leads her team with 13 goals this season, surpassing her identical twin Katie (12). Katie, a cocaptain, scored the game’s first goal 18 minutes into the first half.

“The leaders of the team are very generous. Everyone on the team wants to see everyone succeed,” said Duxbury coach Terry Vandewater, who watched her club improve to 9-0-1.

Senior Ally Hammel scored the second goal in the first half off of an assist from her cocaptain Zoe Griffin.

Griffin also assisted on Lily’s first goal, two minutes into the second half. Just three minutes later, Lily scored her second goal off of an assist from her sister. Two minutes later, she completed the hat trick.

With a 5-0 lead, it looked as if Duxbury had accomplished everything it wanted. However, the team still found energy to cheer when sophomore Peyton Donato scored her first varsity goal. She was called up on Tuesday.

“Everyone was cheering, jumping up and down all so proud of her,” Vandewater said. “It’s a very tight-knit group.”

The coach said playing on Duxbury’s state champion hockey team last year would help Donato in her field hockey career.
