MLS roundup: Red Bulls are tops in East

Peguy Luyindula had three assists and the New York Red Bulls beat the visiting Chicago Fire, 5-2, on Sunday to finish with Major League Soccer’s best record.

Ibrahim Sekagya scored early in the second half to help the Red Bulls (17-9-8) get to 59 points for the regular season, lifting them over Sporting KC, which had 58 points. Real Salt Lake led the Western Division with 56 points.

It’s the first Supporters’ Shield for the Red Bulls, who will carry an eight-game unbeaten streak into the playoffs. The loss knocked Chicago (14-13-7) from the playoffs.

Sekagya’s second goal of the season made it 2-1 in the 49th minute, and Lloyd Sam scored seven minutes later for a 3-1 lead.

Dynamo 2, D.C. United 1 — Boniek Garcia and Giles Barnes scored in the first half as visiting Houston (14-11-9) wrapped up a playoff spot.

 The Dynamo will host a knockout game against Montreal, with the winner advancing to face New York.

D.C. United (3-24-7) was winless in its final 12 games and set the MLS record for fewest victories in a season.

Galaxy 1, Sounders FC 1 — Clint Dempsey finally got on the board in his ninth game back in Major League Soccer, scoring in the 30th minute for host Seattle in a draw with Los Angeles.

Robbie Keane scored for the Galaxy, who finished third in the West with the tie. Seattle dropped to fourth and will host Colorado in a knockout game.

Whitecaps 3, Rapids 0 — Camilo Sanvezzo scored three times to give him an MLS-best 22 goals as host Vancouver closed out its season with a win.
