School roundup: Danvers earns shootout victory

The Danvers girls’ soccer team scored on four straight penalty shots to beat host Marblehead, 2-1, in a Division 2 North first-round contest Friday afternoon.

A first-half goal gave the Magicians a 1-0 lead but Danvers senior Kylie Plaza scored the equalizer off a free kick by Cate Raftery with five minutes left in regulation.

After two scoreless periods of overtime, the game went to penalties and a coin toss gave the Magicians the opportunity to shoot first. A mis-hit by Marblehead’s first shooter sent the ball directly toward Falcons senior goalkeeper Leah Ciampa, who easily gathered up the ball for the save.

Delaney Zecha then buried her shot to give Danvers a 1-0 edge in the best-of-five shootout. Marblehead hit its next two tries but was matched by Nicole Belanger and Courtney Arnoldy for Danvers.

Ciampa then made another crucial save for the Falcons on Marblehead’s fourth shot, giving her team a chance to win the game with just one more goal. Junior Emily Murphy calmly put the ball past the goalie to clinch the win.

“We played Marblehead twice already. Anytime you’re playing your league foe a third time it’s never easy,” said Falcons coach Jim Hinchion. “We’ve been practicing penalty kicks since week one. The girls that were going to take them take them well. Our keeper was really confident going into that [shootout].”

Danvers will travel to face top-seeded Wilmington on Monday at 4 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

Acton-Boxborough 2, Medford 0 — Amanda Frank and Brianna Faubert scored for the Colonials.

Masconomet 6, Cambridge 0 — Kaleigh White led the Chieftains with two goals.

Division 2 South

Milton 3, Pembroke 1 — Alyssa Lum scored twice to lead the host Wildcats.

Boys’ soccer

Division 3 North

Pentucket 3, Triton 0 — Mike Salmonsen scored the winner for the Sachems (11-5-3) with eight minutes left in the first half.

Division 1 South

Braintree 2, Attleboro 0 — Ryan Miller and Brendan Gawron each scored for the Wamps.

Division 4 North

Hamilton-Wenham 1, CASH 0 — Russell Gregorian scored in the final three minutes for the host Generals advanced to the quarterfinals. Henry Eager got the shutout.

Field hockey

Division 1 North

Acton-Boxborough 2, Framingham 0 — Amanda Frank and Brianna Faubert scored for the defending state champion Colonials.

Division 2 North

Watertown 7, Lynnfield 1 — Rachel Campbell had a hat trick to lead the Raiders.

Division 1 South

Walpole 7, Westwood 1 — Sophomore Nicole Tobin had a hat trick for the Porkers.
