School roundup: Masconomet girls shut out Peabody

In the first of Sunday’s four MIAA Division 1 North girls’ soccer quarterfinal matches, host Masconomet shut out Peabody, 1-0.

The temperature barely reached 40 degrees for the start and it took both teams a while to warm up and settle into the game.

With solid defense and good ball possession, the Chieftains dominated the first half. Although Masconomet didn’t find the back of the net before the half, they had the Tanners on their heels.

Peabody found a little more life at halftime and the second half was a more evenly played game. The Chieftains missed a couple of good shots wide of the goal, but Peabody’s attack continued to be stifled by Masconomet’s defense.

The Tanners’ best opportunity came with 15 minutes to go when a corner kick was deflected directly toward the goal, but Masconomet goalkeeper Katie Pelletier was right there to gather it up.

Two minutes later, Peabody had a throw in deep in the Chieftains’ end. The ball was headed once before a defender knocked it away. The ball made it outside the 18-yard box to Masconomet defender Sarah Katz, who then took a look up to see junior forward Kate Kitsakos open near midfield.

Katz played her the ball, Kitsakos beat one defender on the turn and outpaced another as she dribbled up the field to have a clear shot at the goal. The Peabody keeper made a last-second effort to stop the breakaway, but Kitsakos slid the ball right by her.

On the final play of the game, Peabody tried to even the score. A free kick taken 35 yards out caused a threatening scramble in the box. Pelletier made the initial save but couldn’t hold on to it. She got back to her goal line just in time to dive at her left post and save the rebounded shot.

The whistle to end the game blew seconds later and Masconomet clinched its spot in the Division 1 North semifinals.

“I thought our defense played great, they don’t cave under pressure,” said Chieftains coach Paula Yanakakis.

“We knew it was going to be a battle right to the end.”
