College hockey: Jon Gillies rebounds to push Providence past Merrimack

A shorthanded goal from Noel Acciari was all the offense Providence needed, and the sixth-ranked Friars bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 1-0 blanking of Merrimack in North Andover.

Jon Gillies made 23 saves in his seventh career shutout for Providence, tying the school record. The Friars (6-1-1, 2-1-0 Hockey East) recovered after a 0-1-1 swing against Boston University last weekend in which the Terriers scored eight goals against the sophomore goalie.
