LYNN — When Jaycie Triandafilou won the Division 3 North sectional title for the Newburyport girls’ soccer team Sunday night, she didn’t even realize it.
After 100 scoreless minutes at Manning Field, the senior captain stepped to the hash mark with the No. 1 Clippers leading the best-of-five penalty kicks, 3-2. She beat Lynnfield goalie Hannah Travers to the left to make it 4-2, lifting her team to a 1-0 victory over the Pioneers for Newburyport’s second sectional championship in three years.
“I was just going for it thinking, ‘OK, just another to put in,’ ” Triandafilou said. “I turned around [saw her teammates running at her], and that was it.”
The first half was a defensive stalemate. Newburyport (19-0-2) and Lynnfield (16-3-2) exchanged offensive chances and some shoves.
The Clippers possessed for the vast majority of the second 40 minutes, but Travers (15 saves) was there each time, including slide tackling Triandafilou on a breakaway in the 54th minute and diving to stop Abbie Bresnahan’s rocket moments later.
For Newburyport, goalkeeper Lilly Donovan (11 saves) stopped one penalty kick while senior captains Alyssa Leahy and Carly Brand, and Bresnahan converted on theirs before Triandafilou ended it.
