Matt Reis lies on the turf after injuring his left quadriceps during the Revolution’s playoff loss last week. He had surgery on Monday.

New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis underwent surgery Monday to repair a torn tendon on his left quadriceps and will need 5-7 months to recuperate, the team announced.

Reis suffered the injury during the Revolution’s 3-1 season-ending playoff loss to Sporting Kansas City last Wednesday.

Reis had run out from the goal to chase down a loose ball but fell before he got to it, suffering the injury.

Reis, 38, underwent surgery early Monday morning in Boston. He started 12 games in goal for the Revolution this year, the majority of those starts coming late in the season. He went 7-0-4 and posted a career-best goals-against average (0.72) in 2013, and recorded five shutouts. The 12 starts were his fewest since making five in his first season with the Revolution in 2003.

If Reis, a 16-year MLS veteran, decides to continue his MLS career following rehab from the injury, he would not be available until April or May. The MLS season usually starts in March.

The Revolution’s backup goalkeeper, Bobby Shuttleworth, re-signed with the team in April. But though Shuttleworth had the starting job for a good portion of the season, Reis overtook the 26-year-old again in early August, and started 10 of the team’s final 11 games.

New England has a third goalkeeper on its roster, Luis Soffner, 23, who was drafted by the Revolution in the second round in 2013. Soffner started for four years at Indiana University, helping the Hoosiers to the 2012 NCAA Division 1 championship. Soffner did not appear in any games this season for the Revolution.

Reis has played in New England the past 11 seasons, after playing his first five MLS seasons for the Los Angeles Galaxy.
