Drew Smiley, St. John’s (Shrewsbury) upend Leominster

After losing five consecutive times to Leominster, including the past two Super Bowls, St. John’s of Shrewsbury quarterback Drew Smiley was determined not to allow that streak to reach six.

Smiley rushed for 197 yards and three touchdowns, threw for 250 yards and three scores, and made a game-clinching interception to lead St. John’s to a stunning, 51-42 win over the previously unbeaten Blue Devils (9-1) in Friday night’s Central Mass. Division 2 championship at Doyle Field in Leominster.

The Pioneers (8-2) will face Western Mass. champion Springfield Central in the Division 2 state semifinals next Saturday at Westfield State University.
