Derek Carr finally ran into a quarterback who could match his prolific production. That’s all it took to end Fresno State’s bid for a BCS bowl.

David Fales threw for a school-record 547 yards and six touchdowns in an entertaining showdown with Carr and host San Jose State spoiled the 16th-ranked Bulldogs perfect season with a 62-52 victory Friday.

‘‘It’s hard,’’ Carr said. ‘‘Guys are torn up, as well they should be. If you like losing there’s something wrong with you.’’

Fales was every bit as good as the more-heralded Carr, matching his six first-half touchdown passes in a near perfect performance that made the Spartans (6-6, 4-4 Mountain West) bowl eligible with their first win over a ranked opponent since 2000.

Fales also rushed for a 1-yard score in the fourth quarter that gave the Spartans a 59-44 lead.

Carr threw for 519 yards and six touchdowns, but also had a fourth-quarter interception for the Bulldogs (10-1, 7-1). Davante Adams caught 13 passes for 264 yards and three scores.

The loss ended Fresno State’s chances to beat out Northern Illinois for a spot in a BCS game. The Huskies are the only undefeated team from a non-automatic qualifying conference.

The Bulldogs will still play in the Mountain West title game next week against either Utah State or Boise State.

Oregon 36, Oregon State 35 — Marcus Mariota threw a 12-yard TD pass to Josh Huff with 29 seconds left and the No. 12 Ducks overcame a tenacious effort by the Beavers (6-6, 4-5) in the 117th Civil War game.

Mariota threw for 285 yards and three TDs — all to Huff, who had nine catches for a season-high 186 yards — and Oregon (10-2, 7-2 Pac-12) sealed their sixth straight 10-win season. It was also the team’s sixth straight victory over the Beavers.

LSU 31, Arkansas 27 — Freshman quarterback Anthony Jennings replaced an injured Zach Mettenberger in the fourth quarter and lofted a 49-yard TD pass to Travin Dural with 1:15 left as No. 15 LSU pulled out a tense victory over the upset-minded Razorbacks (3-9, 0-8) in Baton Rouge, La.

Jennings entered after Mettenberger hurt his left leg in the fourth, and the game came down to whether Jennings could drive the Tigers 99 yards in the final three minutes.

He responded with a pair of clutch first-down passes and a 21-yard scramble to set up his winning scoring strike for the Tigers (9-3, 5-3).

The loss extended Arkansas’ school-record losing streak to nine games and ensured its first winless record in the SEC since joining the conference in 1992.

Central Florida 23, South Florida 20 — Breshad Perriman scored on a 52-yard TD pass from Blake Bortles with 4:50 left in the fourth to give the No. 17 Knights a win over the Bulls, keeping Central Florida (10-1, 7-0) on course for the American Athletic Conference title and BCS bid.

The Knights committed five turnovers, including three by Bortles.

Central Florida secured at least a share of the conference title. A victory against SMU next week will give it the title outright and the Knights’ first bid to the BCS.

South Florida (2-9, 2-5) had a final chance to win or send the game to overtime, but a late interception by freshman Mike White ended its hopes.

Miami 41, Pittsburgh 31 — Stacy Coley hauled in a pair of touchdown passes and zig-zagged 73 yards on an end around for another score as the Hurricanes (9-3, 5-3) kept their slim hopes for a spot in the ACC title game alive with a victory in Pittsburgh.

Miami assured itself of its first nine-win season since 2009 with the victory. It needs losses by Duke and Virginia Tech on Saturday to earn a rematch with No. 2 Florida State in the title game in Charlotte next Saturday.

Bowling Green 24, Buffalo 7 — The Falcons (9-3, 7-1) will meet No. 18 Northern Illinois in the Mid-American Conference championship game at Ford Field in Detroit after securing the MAC East division title with a win over the Bulls at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y.

Travis Greene rushed for 125 yards and a TD, Matt Johnson threw for a TD and passed for another, and Bowling Green held Buffalo (8-4, 6-2) to season lows in points and yards (236).

Bulls linebacker Khalil Mack tied Jason Babin’s FBS career record of 75 tackles for loss with 2½ against the Falcons.

Marshall 59, East Carolina 28 — Rakeem Cato threw for two TDs and ran for two more as the host Thundering Hurd defeated the Pirates (9-3, 6-2) to win Conference USA East division title. Marshall (9-3, 7-1) will face either Rice, Tulane, or Texas-San Antonio for the C-USA title.
