Daniel Alfredsson scored an empty-net goal and added an assist in his return to Ottawa, and the Detroit Red Wings beat the host Senators, 4-2, Sunday night.
Alfredsson, the former longtime captain of the Senators, wasn’t primarily responsible for Ottawa’s second straight loss and fourth consecutive at home, but he helped contribute to the continuation of his ex-team’s woes.
Like so many times in their previous 27 games in the post-Alfredsson era, something was missing for the Senators (10-13-4). Defensive breakdowns led to goals, and there wasn’t enough offense to compensate.
Drew Miller scored twice, Johan Franzen added a goal, and Jonas Gustavsson made 29 saves for Detroit.

Clarke MacArthur and Mika Zibanejad had goals for Ottawa.
The Senators were 0 for 4 on the power play, and the Red Wings seemed to capitalize on every mistake.
MacArthur scored his eighth goal of the season, and Zibanejad made things interesting late, but it wasn’t enough for the Senators to improve to 3-0 against the Red Wings. Ottawa won the first two meetings in Detroit.
Gustavsson, who like Alfredsson is a native of Gothenburg, Sweden, earned the victory, and countryman Robin Lehner took the loss.
Canucks 3, Hurricanes 2 — Ryan Kesler scored two goals to lead Vancouver over Carolina in Raleigh, N.C.
Tom Sestito also scored for the Canucks and Jason Garrison had two assists. Backup goalie Eddie Lack made 29 saves to help Vancouver pick up its third win in its past 11 games.
Kesler’s second goal capped a stretch where the teams combined to score three goals in 37 seconds.
Jordan Staal and Nathan Gerbe scored for Carolina. Cam Ward made 27 saves.
The Hurricanes squandered six power-play opportunities against the NHL’s best penalty-killing unit and have lost six of their past eight games.
Oilers 3, Stars 2 — Jordan Eberle and David Perron scored in the shootout, and Devan Dubnyk come on in relief of injured goalie Ilya Bryzgalov and earned a victory for visiting Edmonton.

Dubnyk stopped two of three shots in the tiebreaker. The Stars’ Kari Lehtonen failed to make a save in the shootout.
Center Tyler Seguin, leading Dallas with 12 goals, missed his first game this season because of concussion-like symptoms resulting from a hit during Friday’s game against Chicago.
Edmonton’s Ales Hemsky scored 5 seconds before the second period ended, and Andrew Ference fired in a slap shot with 5:07 remaining in regulation to tie it again.
Ryan Garbutt scored two goals, including a shorthanded tally that gave Dallas a 1-0 lead in the second period. He also put the Stars ahead in the third.
. . .
In San Jose Saturday night, Joe Pavelski scored in the shootout and Antti Niemi stopped all three attempts to help the Sharks beat Anaheim, 4-3.
Logan Couture, Patrick Marleau, and Marty Havlat also scored for the Sharks, who won their eighth game in nine overall.
